Trash Installation
If you’ve seen some odd-looking garbage bags here in New York recently, don’t be alarmed. It’s part of installation artist Adrian Kondratowicz’s latest project, entitled “Trash — anycoloryoulike.”
The idea is to get city residents to rethink their relationship with consumption and waste, by giving them colorful alternatives to their boring black trash bags. Kondratowicz’s bags come in pink with white polka dots, pink with gold polka dots, and blue with silver polka dots. There are even ones that glow in the dark. Sprawled out along the curb, they’re like a splash of color among the grey city streets, creating an D.I.Y. urban art installation of sorts.
Kondratowicz says his mission is to make art accessible and to bring it to public spaces. He also hopes to use the biodegradable bags to promote environmental awareness and perhaps, make cleaning up just a little bit more fun.
The bags are available for sale on the Kondratowicz’s website and he’s also been commissioned to create installations outside stores and galleries across the city. So at least here in New York, the old adage still holds true: one person’s trash is really someone else’s treasure.
